Social Justice
The Torah teaches us, “Do not harden your heart or shut your hand to your needy brother” (Deuteronomy 15:7). At TBS, we take this message of justice to heart. Along with Jewish studies, prayer, Hebrew, and music, each TBS student has the opportunity to wrestle with issues of justice. Each of our classes has a specialized social justice component, from a “For Prophet Justice Fair” to a Second Harvest canned food drive. We offer families a variety of volunteer and giving opportunities that extend well beyond the space and time of religious school.
Each year our school chooses a social justice theme. Through learning, action, and giving, we work together as a sacred community to bring tzedek (justice) to our world. Throughout the year, we have programs, invite speakers, and engage in actions around social justice.
Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heshel taught “What young people need is not religious tranquilizers, religion as a diversion, religion as entertainment, but spiritual audacity, intellectual guts, power of defiance!” At TBS, we take this message to heart. We believe that a firm commitment to justice should be at the core of our students’ Jewish identities.
